The company continues large-scale renovation of the steelmaking unit
The Kametstal Metallurgical Plant continues large-scale overhaul of converter No. 2. A team of specialists is working according to the schedule for the second stage, the main task of which is to replace key equipment of the waste heat boiler. This is stated in the company’s report.
The waste heat boiler is the most important component of the converter’s gas exhaust system. The main task of the current stage of overhaul is to completely replace its caisson, since the condition of the previous equipment after prolonged “hot” operation no longer meets the technological needs and requirements for trouble-free operation of the converter.
Currently, specialists have completed the large-scale assembly of the new caisson equipment, with its components and assemblies delivered to the workshop from a Ukrainian manufacturer. At the same time, communication pipelines have already been dismantled on converter No. 2, which has been shut down for repair work, in order to free up the caisson that has reached the end of its service life.
In the near future, large components with a total weight of over 50 tons will also be dismantled. After that, the new caisson will be lifted from the zero mark site, where the large-scale assembly was carried out, to the +24 meter mark using special mounting devices and installed in the working position on the converter.
As part of the overhaul, a number of important converter equipment components are being repaired on the oxygen supply machine, vertical bulk material route, etc. One of the main tasks is also to clean the gas exhaust route, which, in turn, will increase the efficiency of converter gas cleaning.
Considerable attention is being paid to the renewal of energy equipment, in particular the drum separator. In addition, shut-off valves and pipelines are being replaced to ensure stable operation in the future.
In June this year, Kametstal completed the most extensive overhaul under the 2025 program – the modernization of blast furnace No. 9. The blast furnace was brought up to design parameters, the lining was restored, and the equipment and infrastructure were updated.
