Italy reduced steel production by 10.8% m/m in April

Italian steelmakers reduced steel production by 10.8% in April 2025 compared to the previous month to 1.799 million tons. The figure increased by 6.1% compared to the same month in 2024. This is evidenced by data from the industry association Federacciai, SteelOrbis reports.

In January-April, steel production by Italian metallurgists increased by 3.8% compared to January-April 2024 to 7.33 million tons.

Flat production in April was up 13.3% y/y and down 9.6% m/m – to 817 thousand tons, while in January-April it increased by 10.5% y/y – to 3.3 million tons. Long products output increased by 6.5% y/y and fell by 8.3% m/m – to 1.1 million tons. In January-April, production of long products increased by 0.9% y/y – to 4.2 million tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, Italy decreased steel production by 5% compared to 2023, to 20 million tons. In December 2024, Italian steelmakers reduced steel production by 8.8% compared to December 2023 and by 33.4% – to 1.199 million tons compared to the previous month.

Long products production for the year amounted to 11.7 million tonnes, down 0.2% compared to 2023, and flat products production amounted to 8.6 million tonnes (-9.7% y/y). Thus, long products output experienced only a slight decline, supported by increased construction activity. At the same time, the weakness of the automotive sector and industry, as well as high volumes of competitive imports, had a negative impact on flat products.

Overall, steel production in the European Union increased by 2.6% in 2024 compared to 2023 to 129.5 million tons. Global steel production for the year amounted to 1.84 billion tons, down 0.9% year-on-year.
