Ukraine’s sea freight turnover grew by 28% y/y in 2024

Last year, trade turnover through sea checkpoints increased by 28.2% y/y – to 97.91 million tons, while overland transportation decreased by 8.1% – to 64.3 million tons. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine with reference to the State Customs Service.

The number of seagoing vessels cleared through the customs border in 2024 increased by 14.1% y/y – to 10.5 thousand, river vessels – by 3% y/y, to 34.4 thousand. At the same time, the same figures for motor vehicles decreased by 6.8% y/y – to 7.67 million, railcars – by 8.2%, to 1.28 million.

As noted, the turnover of goods by land increased only through the border with Poland – by 1% y/y, to 32.83 million tons, while through the Slovak and Romanian borders it decreased by 12% and 12.2% y/y – to 13.36 million tons and 9.26 million tons, respectively. Trade through the Hungarian and Moldovan borders fell by 22.1% and 26.5%, to 4.57 million tons and 4.27 million tons, respectively.

Ukraine’s trade turnover in 2024 increased by 13% compared to 2023, from $99.4 billion to $112.3 billion. During the year, Ukraine imported $70.7 billion worth of goods and exported $41.6 billion. At the same time, taxed imports amounted to $57.4 billion, which is 81% of the total volume of imported goods.

Among the countries from which Ukraine imported the most goods: China – $14.4 billion, Poland – $7 billion, and Germany – $5.4 billion. Ukraine exported most of its goods to Poland – by $4.7 billion, Spain – by $2.9 billion, and Germany – by $2.8 billion.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukraine’s trade turnover amounted to $99.4 billion in 2023. In particular, the country imported $63.5 billion worth of goods and exported $36 billion.
