Global steel production increased by 14.8% m/m in March

Global steel production in March 2025 increased by 14.8% compared to the previous month to 166.1 million tons. The figure increased by 2.9% compared to the same month in 2024. This is evidenced by the global ranking of steel producing countries (69) by the World Steel Association.

Total steel production in the CIS+Ukraine decreased by 3.5% y/y and increased by 5.6% m/m – to 7.1 million tons over the month, while in Ukraine it decreased by 9.9% y/y and 3.7% m/m – to 550.5 thousand tons.

The top ten steel producing countries in March, according to World Steel, were:

  • China – 92.8 million tons (+4.6% y/y);
  • India – 13.8 million tons (+7%);
  • Japan – 7.2 million tons (+0.2%);
  • USA – 6.7 mln tons (-1.5%);
  • Russia – 6.2 mln tons (-3.2%);
  • South Korea – 5 million tons (-5.3%);
  • Iran – 3.3 million tons (+3.7%);
  • Turkey – 3.1 million tons (-2.8%);
  • Germany – 3.1 million tons (-11.7%);
  • Brazil – 2.9 million tons (+6.6%).

In January-March, global steel production decreased by 0.4% y/y – to 468.6 million tons. In the CIS+Ukraine region, the figure decreased by 2.6% y/y – to 20.5 million tons. Ukraine produced 1.73 million tons of steel in three months, up 2.7% y/y.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, global steel production decreased by 0.9% compared to 2023 – to 1.839 billion tons. In December 2024, the figure amounted to 144.5 million tons, up 5.6% compared to December 2023 and down 1.6% month-on-month.

Last year, Ukraine produced 7.57 million tons of steel, up 21.6% compared to 2023. In December, the production volume amounted to 547 thousand tons (+5.1% y/y; +1.1% m/m).
