In January-May, German steelmakers reduced steel production by 4.8%

In May 2022, German steel plants reduced steel production by 11.5% compared to May 2021, to 3.24 million tons, German steel association WV Stahl reported.

In January-May, steel production decreased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year, to 16.37 million tons.

German pig iron production in May decreased by 14.1% compared to May 2021, to 2.01 million tons, and after five months – by 5.1%, to 10.3 million tons.

Production of hot-rolled steel for the month decreased by 8.4%, to 2.82 million tons, and in January-May – by 5.1%, to 14.47 million tons.

In May, Germany took 7th place in the global ranking of steel producers. World steel production in May decreased by 3.5% compared to May 2021, to 169.5 million tons. In 5 months, production fell by 6.3%, to 791.8 million tons.

Germany is among the top ten steel producers in the world according to World Steel. In 2021, the country increased steel production by 12.3% compared to 2020, to 40.1 million tons, ranking 8th in the world ranking of producers.
