Eurorail is planned to be built on the section from Mostyska to Lviv

A 1435 mm wide European gauge is planned to be built on the railway section from Mostyska station, which is located on the border with Poland, to Lviv (Sknyliv). This is stated in a press release from the Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine.

The section will be modernized with the participation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). On November 24, USAID, Ukrainian Railways, Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery Oleksandr Kubrakov, and U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the project.

«One of the important tasks to increase export capacity is to modernize and replace railways and, if necessary, build new ones. The signing of the Memorandum with USAID will have a significant impact on the recovery of the Ukrainian economy and will contribute to European integration processes in general. It is also important that this track will be used not only for freight but also for passenger transportation to the EU,» Oleksandr Kubrakov commented.

A further development project will include connecting the European gauge to Uzhhorod, Kovel, Chernivtsi, and at a later stage to Kyiv and eastern Ukraine. USAID will also facilitate further integration of the Ukrainian railroad into the TEN-T system.

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion in 2022, USAID has provided more than $21.7 billion in assistance to the Government of Ukraine, making it one of the largest bilateral donors to Ukraine. These funds support economic development, democracy and governance, healthcare programs, and humanitarian assistance.

As GMK Center reported earlier, almost 3.3 thousand kilometers of European gauge track may be built in Ukraine to integrate the Ukrainian railroad into the European space. To implement these plans, UZ plans to cooperate with the main European fund for infrastructure development, the Connecting Europe facility.
