European Union imported 15,600 tons of scrap from Ukraine in April

In April 2023, the European Union increased the import of scrap from Ukraine by 12.8 times compared to April 2022 – up to 15.6 thousand tons. Compared to March 2023, the import of raw materials decreased by 3.6%. This is evidenced by Eurostat’s data.

In January-April 2023, European importers consumed 54.2 thousand tons of Ukrainian scrap, which is 15.2 times more compared to the same period in 2022. In general, since the beginning of the year, the tendency to increase the export of scrap from Ukraine to the EU has been gradually picking up pace – in January, 8.3 thousand tons of Ukrainian raw materials were exported to the EU, in February 14.15 thousand tons, in March – 16.2 thousand tons.

In January-April 2023, the costs of European consumers for the import of scrap from Ukraine amounted to €16.2 million, which is 2.8 times more than in the same period of the previous year. In April, €4.82 million was spent on the import of Ukrainian raw materials. This is 5.8% more than in March 2023, and 4.4 times more than in April 2022.

The largest volumes of scrap are supplied to Poland – 50.22 thousand tons. At the same time, in January-April 2022, only 0.9 thousand tons of scrap were delivered to the country from Ukraine. Another 4,000 tons of scrap were consumed by Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and Slovakia. In particular, scrap deliveries to Greece in April amounted to 2.74 thousand tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukraine in January-April 2023 increased the export of scrap of ferrous metals by 7.9 times compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 56.4 thousand tons. Therefore, 96% of the total volume of exports is shipped to the European Union. In 2022, exports of raw materials decreased in 11.4 times y/y – to 53.6 thousand tons.
