EU imported 89.8 thousand tons of scrap from Ukraine in the first half of the year

In January-June 2023, the European Union increased the import of ferrous metal scrap from Ukraine by 13.1 times compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 89.8 thousand tons. This is evidenced by the data Eurostat.

In June, European importers consumed 13.8 thousand tons of Ukrainian scrap metal, which is 25.4% less compared to the previous month and 200 times more compared to June 2022. In general, since the beginning of the year, the trend towards an increase in the export of scrap metal from Ukraine to the EU has gradually increased, but in June, imports decreased:

  • January – 8.3 thousand tons;
  • February – 14.15 thousand tons;
  • March – 16.2 thousand tons;
  • April – 15.6 thousand tons;
  • May – 21.8 thousand tons.

According to the results of January-June 2023, the expenses of European consumers for the import of scrap metal from Ukraine amounted to €26.26 million, which is 2.8 times more compared to the same period of the previous year. In June, €3.5 million was spent on the import of Ukrainian raw materials. This is 46.7% less than May of this year, and 3.6 times more compared to June 2022.

The largest volumes of scrap metal are delivered to Poland – 82.2 thousand tons. At the same time, in the first half of 2022, only 1.15 thousand tons of scrap from Ukraine were delivered to the country. Another 7.6 thousand tons of scrap metal was consumed by Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Bulgaria.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukraine according to the results of the first half of 2023 increased export of scrap ferrous metals by 3.2 times compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 92 thousand tons. Consequently, almost 98% of total exports are shipped to the European Union. At the end of 2022, export raw materials declined 11.4 times y./y. – up to 53.6 thousand tons.
