Electra and Interfer to cooperate in the field of pure iron

The American company Electra has signed a memorandum of understanding with the German Interfer Edelstahl Group, an international trader of steel and raw materials, on a partnership in the production of pure iron. This is reported by Recycling Today.

Interfer is focused on developing sources of clean steel and environmentally friendly raw materials across Europe. At the same time, Electra’s low-carbon iron production process transforms the environmental impact of metallurgy through the use of chemistry and renewable energy.

As noted, by having access to a reliable supply of environmentally friendly iron from the US company, Interfer will support customers in achieving their decarbonization goals.

In addition, it will contribute to Interfer’s own sustainability goals as the company works to reduce its absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 42% by 2030 compared to the base year of 2022.

According to Electra’s CEO and co-founder Sandeep Nijawan, the company’s modular system is designed for rapid deployment to meet the demand of partners and manufacturers who want to use clean iron in their operations.

In the spring, Electra announced the commissioning of a pilot plant in Boulder, Colorado, USA, for the production of pure iron in the form of plates. The plant will use the technology to produce iron from already mined, commercially available ores with high impurity content to accelerate decarbonization and circularity throughout the steel value chain from raw materials to steel.
