DMZ upgrades equipment to increase savings and efficiency

In February of this year, Dnipro Metallurgical Plant (DMZ) installed frequency converters on the equipment of the water supply shop, the recovery shop and the technical control department. This will significantly improve the efficiency of pumping stations and other technological processes, according to the DCH Steel corporate newspaper.

In particular, at the onshore pumping station No. 2, a pump motor was equipped with a frequency converter to supply process water to the coke oven and chemicals production and rolling mill No. 2. The 132 kW pumping unit pumps water to the Stepove Lake station, from where it is supplied to the Coke and Chemicals Production Department and the Rolling Shop during production campaigns. During the off-peak period, the unit is only run during the hours of minimum electricity cost, while during rolling campaigns it operates around the clock with a load of about 110 kW. The installation of the frequency converter will reduce power consumption to 95 kW, which will contribute to significant resource savings.

In addition, a frequency converter was installed in the chemicals recovery shop of the Coke Plant for the engine of blower No. 72, which provides air for the treatment of phenolic wastewater. We also replaced a high-frequency current converter on a large-size RVL-500 scattering machine used to prepare coke samples. The previous device was out of order and had to be operated manually. To solve the problem, the frequency converter was dismantled from the blast furnace shop equipment and the RVL-500 was restored. The repair work was carried out by the electricians of the coal coke shop.

The measures taken are aimed at improving production efficiency and reducing energy consumption at the enterprise.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, DMZ reduced rolled steel production by 59.4% compared to 2023, to 42.9 thousand tons. Coke production decreased by 1.2% y/y – to 289.1 thousand tons.

Dnipro Metallurgical Plant is one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine. It is part of DCH Steel, a division of DCH Group. DMZ produces the largest range of channels and angles, and is the only producer in Ukraine of channels with parallel shelves from 12 to 30, special profiles for machine building, crane and mine rails.
