Italy increased steel production by 4.9% m/m in May

Italian steelworks increased steel production by 4.9% in May 2026 compared with the previous month, reaching 2.02 million tonnes. Compared with the same month in 2025, the figure rose by 3.2%. This is according to data from the industry association Federacciai, as reported by SteelOrbis.

Flat steel output in May stood at 732,000 tonnes, down 11.2% year-on-year and 1.5% month-on-month, whilst long steel output was 1.2 million tonnes (up 0.4% year-on-year and unchanged from the previous month).

In the January–May period of this year, steel production in the country rose by 3% year-on-year – to 9.6 million tonnes.

Over the first five months, Italy reduced its production of flat steel by 7.6% year-on-year – to 3.8 million tonnes, whilst production of long steel increased by 8.1% year-on-year – to 5.8 million tonnes.

As reported by GMK Center, in 2025, Italy increased steel production by 3.6% compared with 2024, reaching 20.7 million tonnes. In December, steel production fell by 17.5% compared with the previous month, but rose by 20.5% compared with December 2024, reaching 1.45 million tonnes.

Production of flat steel products rose by 3.8% year-on-year in the past year compared with 2024, reaching 8.9 million tonnes, whilst production of long steel products increased by 5.5% year-on-year – to 12.3 million tonnes.

Overall, EU countries reduced steel production last year by 2.6% compared with 2024 – to 126.2 million tonnes. In December, the figure rose by 3.9% year-on-year, to 9.9 million tonnes.
