Consumption of steel products in Ukraine rose to 1.94 million tons in January-June

In January-June 2025, Ukraine increased its consumption of steel products (rolled products and semi-finished products) by 11.6% compared to the same period in 2024, to 1.939 million tons. This is evidenced by data from Ukrmetprom.

Over six months, 716,700 tons of steel products were imported into Ukraine, which is 25.2% more than in the same period last year. Imports account for 37% of the domestic rolled steel consumption market. The share of imports in domestic steel product consumption increased by 2.85 percentage points year-on-year.

The structure of imports is characterized by a significant dominance of flat rolled products over long products – 77.31% and 20.96%, respectively. In January-June 2024, the dominance of flat rolled products over long products was also significant – 80.1% and 18.3%, respectively.

In total, Ukrainian steelmakers produced 3.07 million tons of rolled products in the first six months of the year, which is 2.2% less than in the same period of 2024. A total of 1.85 million tons of steel products were exported, which is 7.4% less than in the same period last year.

1.22 million tons of rolled products and semi-finished products were supplied to the domestic market, which is 6.8% more year-on-year. In January-June, Ukrainian steelmakers increased shipments of products to the domestic market, with exports accounting for 60.2% of total production for the period, compared to 63.6% a year ago.

The share of flat rolled products in export deliveries increased to 46.8% compared to 41.7% a year earlier. The share of long products in export deliveries increased to 22.3% from 12.9%, while the share of semi-finished products fell to 30.9% from 45.4%.

The main export markets for Ukrainian rolled steel products in the first six months of 2025 are the European Union (83.1%), other European countries (7.5%), and the CIS (6.7%). Among steel importers, other European countries ranked first (57.4%), followed by the EU (23.3%) and Asian countries (18.7%).

As reported by GMK Center, consumption of steel products in Ukraine in 2024 decreased by 6.26% year-on-year to 3.288 million tons. Over the year, 1.235 million tons of steel products were imported, which is 10.2% more than last year, and about 4.17 million tons of products were exported, which is 39.7% more than last year. Domestic production amounted to 6.22 million tons (+15.8% year-on-year).
