Consumption of metal products in Ukraine in January–July increased to 2.3 million t

According to the results for January–July 2025, Ukraine increased its consumption of steel products (rolled products and semi-finished products) by 13.2% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 2.302 million t. This is evidenced by data from Ukrmetallurgprom Association.

Over the seven months, the country imported 862.7 thousand t of steel products, which is 21.2% more year-on-year.

The import structure in January–July, as before, is characterized by a significant dominance of flat-rolled products over long products (74.75% and 20.20%, respectively). In the same period of 2024, this ratio was 79.38% and 19.04%, respectively.

In total, during January–July, Ukrainian metallurgical plants produced 3.62 million t of rolled products, which is 2.8% less compared to the same period in 2024. Exports totaled 2.182 million t (‑9.3% y/y).

For the domestic market, during the seven months of 2025, 1.44 million t of rolled products and semi-finished products were supplied, which is 8.8% more y/y. In January–July, Ukrainian steelmakers increased shipments of products to the domestic market, with the share of exports in the total output for the period amounting to 60.2%, whereas a year earlier the figure stood at 64.5%.

The main export markets for Ukrainian rolled products over the first seven months of the current year, according to the State Customs Service, are the EU countries (81.5%), other European countries (8.2%), and the CIS countries (6.7%).

Among importers of steel products during the period, first place went to other European countries (55.4%), second to the EU-27 (23.7%), and third to Asian countries (17.8%).

Recall that last year, consumption of steel products in Ukraine decreased by 6.26% year-on-year, to 3.288 million t. In 2024, imports amounted to 1.235 million t, up 10.2% year-on-year; exports totaled about 4.17 million t, up 39.7% y/y. Domestic production reached 6.22 million t (+15.8% y/y).
