Coking coal exports from Australia to India fell to a two-year low in August 2022

Australian coking coal exports to India fell by 15% month-on-month in August 2022 – to 3.19 million tons, the lowest index in two years. SteelMint reports about it.

In January-August 2022, the coking coal export from Australia to India decreased by 16% y/y – to 32.5 million tons.

In July-August 2022, Indian steel enterprises actively ordered cheap coke from China and Indonesia. It reduced the demand for coking coal. Also, as the publication notes, the steel market in India is affected by the 15% export duty introduced in May 2022 and by general recessionary trends in the world economy.

At the same time, Australian coking coal shipments to Vietnam in August 2022 increased by 53% month-on-month – to 1.14 million tonnes. Vietnamese steel enterprises replenished inventories, as they expect domestic steel demand to improve amid government efforts to increase state investments in large projects.

Coking coal exports from Australia are expected to be limited in the coming months due to weak global demand for steel products.

As GMK Center reported earlier, exports of rolled products from India in August 2022 fell by 66% y/y – to 454 thousand tons. Production, in particular, decreased due to weak demand from key importing countries, such as Vietnam.
