A fire has brought Tata Steel’s hot rolling mill in the UK to a standstill

Part of Tata Steel’s operations in the UK are currently suspended following a fire at the Port Talbot plant. This is according to Kallanish.

On Friday, the company announced that a full assessment of the damage to the affected area is underway following a fire on the pickling line that occurred on the evening of 3 June. It is also noted that the hot rolling mill was temporarily shut down due to the incident. Experts are currently working on its planned restart.

Meanwhile, the logistics and supply departments are actively implementing plans to minimise the impact. In particular, alternative processing has been deployed at the cold rolling mill and slitting line in Llanwern (South Wales). Tata Steel emphasises that these measures are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted supply and supporting customers during this crisis period.

“Our priority remains the safety of our employees, as well as the reliable and stable operation of our production assets,” the company added.

Sharon Graham, General Secretary of the Unite trade union, stated that the fire had caused “significant damage to a vital production line”.

It is worth noting that Tata Steel UK has secured an exemption from US tariffs. This allows the company to export steel processed in the UK at the reduced rate applicable to supplies from that country, even if the raw materials were produced abroad. Tata Steel UK’s shipments in the 2025/2026 financial year (ending 31 March) totalled 2.21 million tonnes (-11.9% year-on-year).
