2,400 railcars with iron ore are on the approaches to border crossings with the EU

As of September 11, 2023, there were 2.37 thousand freight railcars with iron ore at the approaches to the western border crossings, which is 8.7% less compared to a month earlier. This is evidenced by the Ukrainian Railways’ data at the disposal of the GMK Center.

The largest number of railcars with iron ore cargoes is heading towards Slovakia – 1.29 thousand units. (-27.4% m/m). In particular, 491 railcars are waiting in the queue for the crossing of Chop, and 800 units – for Uzhhorod. Another 581 railcars with iron ore are headed to Poland (+97.3% m/m), 181 railcars – to Romania (-34.9% m/m), 312 units – to Hungary (+30% m/m).

Also, in the direction of the western railway crossings, 648 railcars with ferrous metals are standing still, which is 35.3% less compared to the beginning of August. The main part of the rolling stock with steel products goes to Poland via the station Mostyska-2 exp. (237 units).

In total, there are 8.53 thousand freight railcars (+12.1% m/m) at the approaches to the western border crossings, in particular:

  • grain – 1.98 thousand units (+70.6% m/m);
  • containers – 1.23 thousand units (+143% m/m);
  • cement – ​​0.38 thousand units (-8.4% m/m).

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukrainian Railways transported 2.06 million tons of iron and manganese ore in August 2023. Iron ore accounts for 16.8% of the total volume of transportation of the railway operator for the past month.

In 2022, Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 45.9 million tons, or by 59.2%, compared to 2021 – to 31.7 million tons. The volume of transportation of ferrous metals during the same period decreased by 57.8% – to 9.2 million tons.
