As a result of Russia’s massive missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on December 23, the Zaporizhstal steelworks was completely cut off from power, causing an emergency shutdown of production. This was reported by the Metinvest Group.
The enterprise was left without external power supply, which required immediate response from the personnel. In extremely difficult conditions, the plant’s team quickly switched to alternative power sources and organized a controlled and safe shutdown of production units in accordance with the approved anti-crisis regulations. This allowed the situation to be stabilized and prevented emergency scenarios from developing at key production facilities.
Thanks to the timely and coordinated actions of the staff, as well as a set of emergency measures to minimize abnormal situations, the company managed to avoid a man-made accident and significantly reduce the level of potential emissions into the atmosphere. The plant emphasizes that there is no threat to the life and health of employees or city residents.
Currently, Zaporizhstal has implemented operational solutions to stabilize the internal power system and maintain the safe condition of equipment. Further gradual restoration of production processes is possible only after the external power supply has been fully restored and the power system has stabilized.
“We thank the power engineers, emergency workers, and all the services that are currently working to restore the country’s power system!” the company concludes.
As a reminder, in January-November 2025, Zaporizhstal increased its rolled metal production by 15.9% compared to the same period in 2024, to 2.543 million tons. Pig iron smelting amounted to 3.254 million tons, up 15.4% year-on-year, while steel production increased by 10.9% year-on-year – to 2.934 million tons. December figures are likely to decline as a result of this incident.
