Zaporizhstal reduced rolled steel output to a 15-month low in October

In October 2024, Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works reduced production of commercial rolled steel by 6.5% compared to the previous month, to 172.2 thousand tons. The figure fell to its lowest level since June 2023. This is stated in the company’s press release.

Pig iron production for the month amounted to 264.5 thousand tons, up 6.4% compared to September, and steel production amounted to 241.3 thousand tons (+18.9% m/m). Compared to the same month in 2023, rolled products production decreased by 17.4%, iron production – by 1%, and steel production – by 4.1%.

In January-October, rolled steel production increased by 21.3% year-on-year – to 2 million tons. Pig iron production amounted to 2.56 million tons (+17% y/y), and steel production was 2.42 million tons (+21% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Zaporizhstal increased its output by 50.6% year-on-year – to 7.24 million tons. In particular, the plant produced

  • pig iron – 2.72 million tons (+35.3% yoy);
  • steel – 2.47 million tons (+65.4%);
  • rolled products – 2.05 million tons (+57.2%).

Enemy shelling and destruction, interruptions in the supply of raw materials and energy, and disruption of logistics routes due to the blockade of seaports led to a decrease in Zaporizhstal’s production performance compared to pre-war levels. In particular, in 2021, the plant produced 4.5 million tons of iron, 3.8 million tons of steel and 3.2 million tons of rolled products. In 2023, the plant operated at an average of 70% of its capacity.
