Smelting of pig iron amounted to 265 thousand tons, and steel – 278.4 thousand tons

In April 2024, Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works increased its production of commercial rolled metal products by 11.8% compared to April 2023, to 229.4 thousand tons. This is stated in the company’s press release.

Pig iron smelting for the month amounted to 265 thousand tons, which is 14.3% more than in the previous month, and steel – 278.4 thousand tons (+10.1% y/y). Rolled products production increased by 4.6% y/y, steel production – by 7.1% y/y, and pig iron production – by 3% y/y.

In January-April, rolled steel production increased by 59.4% year-on-year – to 844.8 thousand tons. Pig iron production amounted to 1.05 million tons (+46.5% y/y), and steel production – 1.01 million tons (+56.1% y/y).

In January 2024 Zaporizhstal produced 196 thousand tons of rolled steel, 261 thousand tons of pig iron and 235.5 thousand tons of steel, and in February – 198.5 thousand tons, 248.8 thousand tons, and 235.4 thousand tons, respectively, and in March – 219.4 thousand tons, 273.1 thousand tons, and 260 thousand tons, respectively.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023 Zaporizhstal increased production by 50.6% compared to 2022 – up to 7.24 million tons. In particular, the plant produced:

  • pig iron – 2.72 million tons (+35.3% y/y);
  • steel – 2.47 million tons (+65.4%);
  • rolled goods – 2.05 million tons (+57.2%).

Enemy shelling and destruction, interruptions in the supply of raw materials and energy, and disruption of logistics routes due to the blockade of seaports led to a decline in Zaporizhstal’s production performance compared to pre-war levels. In particular, in 2021, the plant produced 4.5 million tons of iron, 3.8 million tons of steel and 3.2 million tons of rolled products. In 2023, the plant operated at an average of 70% of its capacity.
