Zaporizhcoke completes overhaul of coke oven battery No. 2

Zaporizhcoke, a subsidiary of Metinvest Group, has completed the next stage of its overhaul program for coke oven battery No. 2. In 2025, the company allocated approximately UAH 50 million to modernize the production unit. The repairs not only extended the battery’s service life, but also stabilized production indicators and reduced the impact on the environment, the company notes.

The work took two years. In 2024-2025, seven battery compartments were completely renovated: four last year and three more this year. Reinforcement elements, armor, frames, and anchor columns on the furnaces were also replaced. The total cost of the work over two years amounted to more than UAH 120 million. Zaporizhogneupor was the key contractor.

The repairs were carried out without stopping production, which made it possible to maintain the planned coke output volumes. Thanks to the upgrade of the unit, it was possible to restore the productivity of the chambers to the design level – 20 tons of coke per day from each chamber.

«Thanks to the repairs, we were able to restore the productivity of the chambers to the design parameters and improve the quality of the product, which is extremely important for blast furnace production. The upgrade and improved tightness of the chambers also helped reduce the environmental impact and improve working conditions for coke chemists,» said Olexander Bekhter, CEO of Zaporizhcoke.

In total, in 2025, the company plans to invest UAH 324 million in capital repairs, IT, occupational safety, environmental projects, and improving the living conditions of employees. Key initiatives include upgrading equipment in the capture, desulfurization, and tar processing shops, as well as modernizing coke chemical transport.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Zaporizhcoke reduced its production by 0.3% in January-June 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, to 434,100 tons.

In 2024, the company increased coke production by 2.1% compared to 2023, to 874,600 tons.

Since 2022, the company has allocated more than UAH 360 million for the capital renovation of the coke oven fleet. Most of the funds were invested in the overhaul of coke batteries No. 2 and No. 5-6. Recent investment projects include the overhaul of coke pusher No. 3 on coke battery (CB) No. 5-6 and the overhaul of the U-30 charge feeding line in the coal preparation shop.

Zaporizhcoke is a key producer of coke chemical products in Ukraine. It is part of the Metinvest Group. The main consumer of its products is the Zaporizhstal steel plant.
