UZ introduced an iron ore transportation convention for ArcelorMittal Poland

JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” (UZ) has introduced a convention for the transportation of iron ore raw materials to Poland for the Polish plants of the EU’s largest metallurgical corporation ArcelorMittal. This is evidenced data UZ.

The ban took effect from August 28, 2023 until cancelled. According to the document, it is prohibited to transport iron ore in all types of wagons through Slavkow LHS (Poland) and Izov (Ukraine) stations.

It should be noted that Ukrzaliznytsia transported in export message 1.45 million tons of iron and manganese ore, up 1.7% from the previous month. In the structure of export cargo transportation, ore took first place with an indicator of 44% of the total volume. In total, in January-July, UZ transported 10.1 million tons of iron and manganese ore in export traffic, which is 41.2% less than in the same period in 2022.

As GMK Center reported, for the first half of 2023, the EU reduced imports of iron ore and concentrate from Ukraine by 17.8% compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 6.88 million tons. Poland is the second largest importer of Ukrainian ore with an indicator of 1.55 million tons (-30.2% y/y). The Czech Republic ranks first with 2.13 million tons (-12.3% y/y).

In general, according to the results of January-June 2023, the Ukrainian MMC shipped for export 8.32 Mt of iron ore, down 51.1% year-on-year. In January-June 2023, domestic mining companies shipped 8.32 million tons of iron ore for export (-51.1% y/y).

The major iron ore producers in Ukraine include: Ingulets GOK, Kryvyi Rih Iron Ore Plant, Poltava Mining, Northern GOK, Central GOK, Southern GOK, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Sukha Balka GOK and Zaporizhzhia Iron Ore Plant.
