US reduced pipe imports from Ukraine by 18% y/y in 2023

In 2023, the United States reduced imports of pipes from Ukraine by 18% compared to 2022, to 93.71 thousand tons. Import costs for this period fell by 21.3% y/y – to $181.2 million. This is evidenced by the UN Comtrade data.

The bulk of imports came from pipes, tubes and seamless profiles of ferrous metals (HS 7304) – 93.7 thousand tons (-20% y/y). A small part of the imports falls on other pipes, tubes and profiles of hollow ferrous metals.

In December 2023, American buyers consumed 6.9 thousand tons of pipes from Ukraine, up 2.2 times compared to December 2022 and 20.1 times compared to the previous month. Overall, in December, the United States imported the largest volume of pipes since June, when 17 thousand tons of Ukrainian pipes were shipped to American consumers.

The average monthly imports of Ukrainian pipes to the US in 2023 amounted to 7.81 thousand tons, compared to 9.76 thousand tons in 2022.

In 2023, Ukrainian pipe companies reduced their exports by 11.8% compared to 2022, to 356.35 thousand tons. Revenues from pipe exports decreased by 15% y/y – to $587.11 million.

The main consumers of Ukrainian pipes are Germany, the US, Romania and Poland.

As GMK Center reported earlier, starting from August 3, 2023, the US set a weighted average dumping margin for OCTG pipes from Ukraine at 4.89%. In addition, the US has imposed a provisional anti-dumping duty of 4.99% on seamless pipes made in Ukraine.
