Ukrainian steelmakers increased exports of long products by 20% y/y in Q1

In January-March 2025, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises increased exports of long products by 19.6% compared to the same period in 2024, to 176.25 thousand tons. The figure was up 18.7% quarter-on-quarter. This is according to GMK Center’s calculations based on the State Customs Service data.

Other rods and bars of carbon steel, not further processed, twisted (HS 7214) accounted for more than 37% of total exports of long products, amounting to 65.14 thousand tons (+3.8 times y/y). Most of the products were exported to Poland – 32.54 thousand tons. Another 28.04 thousand tons were exported to Moldova and 2.56 thousand tons to Lithuania.

In addition, Ukrainian producers exported 61.76 thousand tons of hot-rolled rods and bars made of carbon steel in coils (HS 7213), down 8.4% y/y. The company shipped 35.83 thousand tons to Romania, 13.32 thousand tons to Poland and 5.03 thousand tons to Bulgaria.

Another 33.49 thousand tons (-12.4% y/y) of exports were accounted for by carbon steel wire (HS – 7217). Key consumers include: Poland – 13.48 thousand tons, Germany – 5.72 thousand tons, Czech Republic – 4.08 thousand tons.

In March 2025, Ukraine exported 60.78 thousand tons of long products, up 21.1% compared to March 2024 and down 7.3% compared to the previous month. Shipments of other carbon steel rods and bars, without further processing, and twisted rods amounted to 27.51 thousand tons (+3.6 times y/y; +42.7% m/m), rods and bars without further processing, and twisted rods and bars), hot-rolled rods and bars made of carbon steel in coils amounted to 18.46 thousand tons (-31.5% y/y; -37.3% m/m), and wire – 10.65 thousand tons (-9% y/y; +3.6% m/m).

In the first quarter, foreign exchange earnings from long products exports increased by 4.9% y/y – to $119.9 million, while in March they increased by 7% y/y and decreased by 2.1% m/m – to $41.89 million.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, Ukraine increased exports of long products by 17.3% compared to 2023, from 523.34 thousand tons to 613.73 thousand tons. Hot-rolled rods and bars made of carbon steel in coils (HS 7213) accounted for more than 42% of total exports of long products, amounting to 258.33 thousand tons (+23% y/y). Foreign exchange earnings from long products exports in 2024 increased by 15.1% y/y – to $452.18 million.
