Ukrainian seaports handled 16.7 million tons of iron ore in 11 months

In January-November 2024, Ukrainian seaports increased the transshipment of ore cargo to 16.7 million tons, up from 3.2 million tons in 11 months of 2023. This is evidenced by the data of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” (USPA).

As of December 10, 2024, port workers handled 91.1 million tons of cargo. In January-November, the actual volume of cargo transshipment amounted to 89.9 million tons, which is 70% higher than in the same period last year.

Grain – 56.1 million tons (39.4 million tons in 2023) – and iron ore were the main cargo turnover in this period.

The Ukrainian corridor plays a special role in the growth of transshipment, with 73.4 million tons of cargo transported over 11 months, including 6.5 million tons in November.

In total, in November, Ukrainian seaports handled 7.6 million tons of cargo (6.7 million tons in November 2023).

“These results were made possible thanks to the stable operation of the ports, the support of international partners and the efforts of the Ukrainian Navy, which ensure the safe operation of the Ukrainian corridor. Ukrainian seaports remain a key component of the national economy, guaranteeing the export potential of the agricultural sector and industry even in difficult conditions,” summarizes the USPA.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in January-November 2024, iron ore exports from Ukraine increased by 87.4% compared to the same period in 2023, to 30.25 million tons. The bulk of the product was exported to China – 13.04 million tons, Slovakia – 4.45 million tons, and Poland – 4.69 million tons. Thus, more than half of the raw materials were exported by sea.
