Ukrainian Railways transported almost 3 million tons of iron ore for export in January

In January 2024, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 19.3% compared to the previous month, to 2.99 million tons. The figure increased by 2.6 times compared to January 2023. This was reported to GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.

The company transported 1.794 million tons of raw materials to seaports, or 60% of iron ore exports. The volume of land crossings was 1.197 million tons (40%).

Transportation of ferrous metals in January reached 441.8 thousand tons, up 0.4% month-on-month and 16.2% by January 2023. The figure reached its highest level since May 2023, when 472 thousand tons of steel products were transported.

In January 2024, UZ transported a total of 14.1 million tons of cargo, up 3.2% m/m and 25.1% y/y. Monthly transportation volumes have been gradually increasing since October 2023.

In export traffic, 7.5 million tons of cargo were transported over the month, up 13.3% m/m and 45% y/y. In the structure of export transportation, the first place is occupied by grain cargo 3.37 million tons (44.9%). Iron ore is in second place (39.9%), and ferrous metals are in third place (5.9%).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y, to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
