Ukrainian Railways transported 3 million tons of iron ore to Poland in January-July

In January-July 2024, Ukrainian Railways (UZ)  transported 3.07 million tons of iron ore through the Ukrainian-Polish border crossings. This was discussed during a meeting of representatives of Ukrainian Railways with Polish carriers, Rail.Insider reports.

In general, within 7 months, the transfer of goods through the Ukrainian-Polish border crossings increased by 32% compared to the same period in 2023 – up to 12.74 million tons.

All border crossings showed positive dynamics. Thus, 331 thousand tons of cargo were transferred through the Rava-Ruska – Verkhrata junction (+3 times y/y), Yagodyn – Dorohusk – 2.41 million tons (+71% y/y), Mostyska – Medyka – 3.05 million tons (+21% y/y), Izov – Hrubieszów – 6.95 million tons (+24% y/y).

Other than ore, the main cargoes transferred through the Ukrainian-Polish railroad crossings were other than coal:

  • grain – 1.49 million tons;
  • petroleum products – 1.47 million tons;
  • construction materials – 1.21 million tons;
  • ferrous metals – 919 thousand tons

In July 2024, Ukrainian Railways increased iron and manganese ore transportation by 65% compared to July 2023, to 3.6 million tons. In total, the company transported 13.6 million tons of cargo over the month, up 12% year-on-year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo in 2023, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. Iron ore transportation decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals by 10.6% y/y – to 8.2 million tons, and grain by 5.9% y/y – to 30.6 million tons.
