Ukrainian Railways transported 3.9 million tons of ore to Poland in January-September

In January-September 2024, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) transported 3.87 million tons of iron ore to Poland, which is 1.16 million tons more than in the same period in 2023. This is reported by Rail.Insider with reference to a meeting of UZ representatives with Polish carriers.

In total, 15.96 million tons of cargo were transferred through railway border crossings with Poland over 9 months, which is 26% more compared to January-September 2023.

The largest amount of cargo was transferred through the Izov – Hrubieszów junction – 8.57 million tons (+19% y/y). Mostyska II – Medyka passed 3.94 million tons (+17% y/y), Yagodyn – Dorohusk – 3.02 million tons (+55%), and Rava-Ruska – Verkhrata – 431 thousand tons (+2 times).

The top five cargoes with the largest transfer volume, in addition to iron ore, are:

  • oil cargo – 1.87 million tons (+695 thousand tons y/y);
  • grain and milling products – 1.86 million tons;
  • construction materials – 1.67 million tons (+979 thousand tons y/y);
  • ferrous metals – 1.15 million tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in September 2024, Ukrainian Railways increased iron ore exports by 1.7% compared to the previous month to 2.361 million tons. In January-September, iron ore export transportation amounted to 25.19 million tons (+2 times y/y).

In 2023, UZ transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. Transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% yoy to 30.6 million tons.
