Ukrainian Railways transported 3.6 million tons of iron ore for export in March

In March 2024, JSC Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased transportation of iron and manganese ore by 7.5% compared to the previous month – up to 3.58 million tons. Compared to March 2023, the indicator increased 2 times. This was reported by the press service of the railway operator.

In the direction of seaports, 2.245 million tons of raw materials or 62.8% of export transportation of iron ore were transported. Through land crossings – 1.332 million tons (37.2%).

Transportation of ferrous metals for export during March amounted to 367 thousand tons, which is 5.1% less than in the previous month and equal to the indicator of March 2023.

Overall, UZ transported 16.01 million tons of cargo during March 2024, up 10.1% m/m and 31.1% y/y. Monthly transportation have been gradually increasing since last October.

In export traffic, 8.13 mln tons of cargo were transported during the month, which is 4.8% more than m/m and 50.6% more than y/y. In the structure of export transportation, iron ore (44%) takes the first place. The second place is occupied by grain cargoes – 3.24 mln tons (39.9%), and the third place is occupied by ferrous metals (4.5%).

In January-March 2024, export transportation of iron ore products amounted to 9.89 million tons (+2.4 times y/y), grain cargoes – 9.91 million tons (+18.4% y/y), ferrous metals – 1.19 million tons (+13% y/y). In total, UZ transported 44.69 mln tons of cargo during the quarter, which is 28.7% more than y/y. 23.39 mln tons of cargo was shipped for export (+50.6% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, UZ transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, which is 1.5% or 2.2 million tons less than in 2022. Transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y, to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, grain – increased by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
