Ukrainian Railways transported 3.3 million tons of iron ore for export in February

In February 2024, JSC Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 11.3% compared to the previous month – to 3.33 million tons. Compared to February 2023, the indicator increased by 2.5 times. GMK Center was informed about this by the press service of the railway operator.

Seaports transported 2.067 million tons of raw materials, or 62.1% of iron ore exports. The total volume of shipments was 1.262 million tons (37.9%).

Ferrous metal transportation in February reached 386 thousand tons, down 12.5% month-on-month and up 20.5% compared to February 2023.

In February 2024, UZ transported a total of 14.55 million tons of cargo, up 3% m/m and 29.6% y/y. Monthly transportation volumes have been gradually increasing since October last year.

In the export traffic, 7.76 million tons of cargo were transported over the month, up 3.5% m/m and 53% y/y. Iron ore took the first place in the structure of export transportation (42.9%). Grain cargoes are in second place, with 3.3 million tons (42.6%), and ferrous metals are in third place (5%).

In January-February 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 6.32 million tons, grain – 6.67 million tons, and ferrous metals – 828 thousand tons. In total, over two months, UZ transported 28.68 million tons of cargo, up 29.6% y/y. The company shipped 15.52 million tons of cargo for export (+53% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
