Ukrainian Railways transported 2.7 million tons of iron ore for export in May

In May 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 2.8% compared to the previous month, to 2.7 million tons. The figure is up 97.6% compared to May 2023. This was reported to GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.

The company transported 1.394 million tons of raw materials to seaports, or 51.6% of iron ore exports. The volume of land crossings was 1.309 million tons (48.4%).

In May, ferrous metals were exported for 415 thousand tons, up 1% month-on-month and down 12.1% compared to April 2023.

In total, in May 2024, UZ transported 15.54 million tons of cargo, up 2.2% m/m and 34.8% y/y.

In export traffic, 7.55 million tons of cargo were transported over the month, up 7.4% m/m and 56.7% y/y. Grain is the top cargo in the structure of export transportation, with 3.28 million tons (43.4%). Iron ore is in second place (35.8%), and ferrous metals are in third place (5.5%).

In January-May 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 15.23 million tons (+2.1 times y/y), grain – 16.17 million tons (+38.9% y/y), ferrous metals – 2.02 million tons (+4% y/y). In total, UZ transported 75.43 million tons of cargo during the period, up 29.9% y/y. The company transported 37.97 million tons of cargo for export (+56.7% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y – to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
