Ukrainian Railways transported 2.64 million tons of iron ore for export in June

In June 2024, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) reduced the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 2.2% compared to the previous month to 2.64 million tons. The figure increased by 85.1% compared to June 2023. This was reported to GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.

Seaports transported 1.377 million tons of raw materials, or 52% of iron ore exports. The volume of land crossings was 1.266 million tons (48%).

In May, ferrous metals exports amounted to 440 thousand tons, up 6.1% month-on-month and 16% compared to June 2023.

In total, in June 2024, UZ transported 14.69 million tons of cargo, which is 6.3% less than in June, but 17.8% more than in June.

In export traffic, 6.8 million tons of cargo were transported during the month, which is 10% less than in the previous month and 70.6% more than in the previous year. In the structure of export transportation, iron ore ranks first – 39% of the total volume of cargo handled. Grain is in second place – 2.56 million tons (38%), and construction materials are in third place – 453 thousand tons (7%).

In January-June 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 17.87 million tons (+2 times y/y), grain – 18.73 million tons (+43.3% y/y), ferrous metals – 2.46 million tons (+6% y/y). In total, UZ transported 90.26 million tons of cargo over the period, up 28% y/y. The company transported 44.77 million tons of cargo for export (+58.7% y/y).

As a reminder, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
