In the first half of 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) increased the transfer of iron ore through railway border crossings with Moldova to 161 thousand tons. This was discussed during an online meeting of representatives of Ukrainian Railways with carriers from Romania and Moldova, Rail.insider reports.
In total, 1.15 million tons of cargo were transferred to Moldova, which is 23.8% less compared to the same period in 2023. The main cargoes include ore, ferrous metals (127 thousand tons), grain (348 thousand tons), and cement (58 thousand tons).
“The volumes of oil cargo, construction materials and grain decreased. At the same time, transportation of ore, scrap and ferrous metals increased,” the statement said.
In January-June, 1.57 million tons of cargo were transferred through the Ukrainian-Romanian railway border crossings. This is 6% less than in the first half of 2023.
A drop in volumes was recorded at both border crossings. Thus, 1.36 million tons (-7% y/y) were transported through Vadul Siret-Dornesti, and 208 thousand tons (-47% y/y) through Dyakovo Halema.
Over the six months, the largest volumes of grain (561 thousand tons), oil cargo (347 thousand tons), cement (260 thousand tons), timber (181 thousand tons), and ferrous metals (68 thousand tons) were transported through the joints with Romania.
In January-June 2024, Ukrainian Railways transported 22.9 million tons of iron ore. Overall, in the first half of the year, UZ transported more than 90 million tons of cargo. This is 28% more than in the same period in 2023.
As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo in 2023, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. Iron ore transportation decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals by 10.6% y/y – to 8.2 million tons, and grain by 5.9% y/y – to 30.6 million tons.
