Ukrainian Railways transported 12.5 million tons of iron ore for export in January-April

In January-April 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) transported 12.5 million tons of iron ore for export. This is stated in the press release of the railway operator.

In total, since the beginning of the year, UZ has exported a record amount of cargo since the beginning of the full-scale invasion – 30.4 million tons. This is 48.8% more compared to the same period in 2023.

«In 2024, our priorities include increasing the volume of cargo transportation, including exports, which are crucial for the country’s economy. Despite the fact that the enemy has intensified its attacks on the railway infrastructure, we have a record number of cargoes transported in this direction over the past 4 months. The work of every railroader who helped to achieve this result is an important contribution to the stability of our country,» said Yevhen Liashchenko, Chairman of the Board of UZ.

Among the main cargoes exported by rail in 2024, except for iron ore:

  • grain – 12.9 million tons;
  • ferrous metals – 1.6 million tons;
  • construction materials – 867 thousand tons.

In January-April 2024, the railroad transported 59.9 million tons of cargo, up 28.7% year-on-year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, UZ transported 148.4 million tons of cargo in 2023, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. Iron ore transportation decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
