In May 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) transported 1.96 million tons of iron ore. This is evidenced by press service of railway carrier.
Transportation of ferrous metals for the month amounted to 816.3 thousand tons. In general, in May, UZ increased cargo handling by 19.2% compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 11.49 million tons. Average daily cargo handling increased by 15.7% y/y – up to 352.8 thousand tons.
In May, domestic cargo transportation increased by 36.5% y/y – up to 7.17 million tons. 3.79 million tons of cargo was shipped for export, which is 2% less y/y, and for import – 483.4 thousand tons (+7% y/y). Transit traffic amounted to 47 thousand tons.
In the structure of general transportation, in addition to iron and steel products, the mineral construction materials are the leaders – 2.5 million tons, coal – 2.22 million tons and grain – 1.83 million tons. Processing of mineral construction materials increased by more than 70% y/y over the month.
In April 2023, UZ shipped for export 1.665 million tons of iron ore, up 4% from the previous month. Transportation of ferrous metals abroad in April 2023 amounted to 414 thousand tons (+16% m/m).
In April 2023, Ukrainian Railways exported 4.903 million tons of cargo, which is 7.5% less m/m and 25.6% more y/y.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022, Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ores by 59.2% compared to 2021 – to 41.7 million tons. Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals last year decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons. In total, during the year UZ transported 150.6 million tons of cargo, which is 52.1% less compared to 2021.
