Ukrainian Railways is considering sourcing rails from British Steel

Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) requires approximately 60,000 tons of rails annually, and the supply of British Steel products is being considered. This was announced by Oleksiy Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine and Minister of Community and Territorial Development.

He noted that Ukraine is interested in the possibility of a grant-based supply arrangement.

During a meeting between Oleksiy Kuleba and Keir Mazer, a member of the British Parliament and Minister for Aviation, Maritime Transport, and Decarbonization, which took place late last week, the restoration of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure (road, maritime, aviation, and rail) was discussed.

In particular, Ukraine’s needs for implementation within the Infrastructure Taskforce were discussed. Oleksii Kuleba also called for contributions to the Ukraine Transport Support Fund, which the British side joined by signing a declaration in early 2026, and for consideration of the implementation of one of the fund’s infrastructure projects.

The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation with UKEF—the UK government’s expert credit agency—on new transport recovery projects, particularly in the maritime and aviation sectors.

Among the key priorities in the maritime sector for Ukraine are fleet modernization, port infrastructure development, security and digital solutions, and PPP projects in ports.

As a reminder, last year, rail freight transport of iron and steel products decreased by 3%, to 37 million tons. By the end of 2025, shipments of iron and manganese ore decreased by 5.5% year-on-year – to 31.2 million tons, while shipments of ferrous metals increased by 13% year-on-year to 5.8 million tons.

Він зауважив, що Україна зацікавлена у можливості грантового формату постачання.

На зустрічі Олексія Кулеби із Кіром Мазером, членом британського парламенту – міністром з питань авіації, морського транспорту та декарбонізації, яка відбулась наприкінці минулого тижня, обговорювалося відновлення транспортної інфраструктури України (дорожньої, морської, авіаційної та залізничної).

Зокрема, були обговорені потреби України для реалізації в межах Infrastructure Taskforce. Олексій Кулеба також закликав робити внески до Ukraine Transport Support Fund, до якого британська сторона долучилася, підписавши декларацію на початку 2026 року, та розглянути реалізацію одного з інфраструктурних проєктів фонду.

Віцепрем’єр також підкреслив важливість продовження співпраці з UKEF – експертно-кредитним агентством уряду Великобританії – щодо нових проєктів транспортного відновлення, зокрема у морському та авіаційному секторах.

Серед ключових пріоритетів у морській галузі для України – оновлення флоту, розвиток портової інфраструктури, безпекові та цифрові рішення, PPP-проєкти у портах.

Нагадаємо, що торік залізничні перевезення вантажів ГМК скоротилися на 3%, до 37 млн т. Перевезення залізної та марганцевої руди за підсумками 2025 року зменшились на 5,5% р./р., до 31,2 млн т, чорних металів – зросли на 13% р./р., до 5,8 млн т.
