In 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the volume of track repairs by 19.6% compared to 2022, to 1308.3 km. This is stated in the press release of the railway operator.

In particular, 495.6 km of tracks were restored by overhaul, which is 5.7% more than in 2022, and 812.7 km of tracks were repaired with average repairs (+30% y/y).

In addition, 284 sets of turnouts were overhauled last year. A total of 690 sets of turnouts were renewed with medium repairs. In addition, in 2023, UZ restored 6.6 km of tracks and 30 artificial structures damaged as a result of hostilities.

In 2024, the railroad operator plans to renew 1197.5 km of tracks with various types of repairs.

Last year, the company also carried out routine repairs of almost 8,000 km of overhead catenary on the main station tracks and sidings. At traction substations, 18 transformers were overhauled and 31 current and voltage transformers were replaced.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukrainian Railways built 528 freight railcars at its own facilities in 2023, which is a record for the last five years. In particular, 427 fitting platforms were produced last year.

The company’s plans for 2024 include, in particular, a 15% increase in the volume of major overhauls of locomotives at Ukrainian Railways plant facilities, an 8% increase in electric trains, and the development of new products and technologies.

During the past year, UZ reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 13.2% compared to 2022 – up to 27.5 million tons. Transportation of steel products last year amounted to 8.2 million tons, which is 10.6% less than in 2022. In general, transportation of iron and steel goods by rail amounted to 35.7 million tons, which is 24% of the total volume of transportation in 2023.
