In the first four months of 2026, JSC Ukrainian Railways (UZ) generated more revenue from the sale of ferrous scrap than it did in all of 2025. This was reported by Dmytro Kysilevskyi, deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development.
According to the MP, as of April 28, Ukrainian Railways had sold 69,700 tons of ferrous scrap for a total of 439.9 million hryvnias, exceeding the annual figures for 2025 by 16.7% and 10%, respectively.
The raw materials sold were purchased entirely for domestic processing at steel and foundry enterprises. The national railway operator is directing the proceeds toward renewing its rolling stock and improving its financial condition.
As Dmytro Kysilevsky noted, two factors drove the growth in scrap sales by UZ. The first was the zero export quota on scrap introduced by the government.
“This eliminated any uncertainty regarding state policy in the market for this raw material and put an end to speculation by traders. Last year, when scrap could be exported on a massive scale, UZ failed to meet its sales target and did not receive the planned funds. This year, it is selling and receiving payments,” the MP noted.
Another factor was the streamlining of UZ’s auctions—they have become more transparent and understandable for buyers.
“The sale of scrap is an important reserve for improving UZ’s financial condition,” concluded Dmytro Kysilevsky.
As a reminder, in 2025, JSC Ukrainian Railways sold only 60,000 tons of scrap for 400 million UAH. This year, UZ planned to sell 220,000 tons.
As reported by GMK Center, last year Ukrainian scrap exporters increased exports of strategic raw materials by 53% compared to 2024—to 448,680 tons. This figure marks a four-year high, i.e., the highest level since 2021.
