Ukrainian Railways built 528 freight railcars in 2023

In 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) built 528 freight railcars at its own facilities, which is a record for the last five years. This is stated in the message of the railway operator.

In particular, 427 fitting platforms were produced last year.

In 2023, UZ started production of a prototype grain carrier and mass production of 50 dump cars and 50 hopper dosing machines. In addition, the company built a grain carrier at its own facilities that is optimally adapted for transportation on 1520 and 1435 gauge tracks, with most of the components and materials for it being domestically produced.

Last year, the company increased its production of sleepers by 6% y/y – to 867 thousand units and reinforced concrete structures by 10.5% y/y – to 6,937 thousand cubic meters, which was another best result in five years. Crushed stone production increased by 33% year-on-year – to 2.7 million tons.

Ukrainian Railways introduced 47 new product lines, produced 37 thousand units of various products, and saved about UAH 120 million.

The company’s plans for 2024 include a 15% increase in locomotive overhaul at UZ’s facilities, an 8% increase in electric train overhaul, and the development of new products and technologies.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways reduced the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 13.2% compared to 2022, to 27.5 million tons. Last year, steel products were transported by rail at 8.2 million tons, down 10.6% from 2022. In total, the Group’s rail freight transportation amounted to 35.7 million tons, which is 24% of the total transportation volume in 2023.
