Ukrainian ports have handled 80 million tons of cargo since the beginning of the year

Ukrainian ports have handled 80 million tons of cargo since January 1, 2024. Such operational data is provided by the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” (USPA).

Of these volumes, 49.5 million tons are grain, which, as noted, supports the country’s important role as a guarantor of global food security.

“Ukrainian ports continue to operate as usual, ensuring the stable operation of the Ukrainian sea corridor despite the difficult conditions,” the USPA said in a statement.

Ensuring safe navigation and protecting port infrastructure remain priorities in the face of constant threats, the state-owned enterprise noted.

According to the USPA, in September this year, Ukrainian seaports handled 7.1 million tons of cargo, which is more than twice as much as in 2023 (3.4 million tons). The leaders of cargo turnover were grain and ore cargoes – 4.1 million tons (vs. 2.3 million tons in 2023) and 1.3 million tons (vs. 249 thousand tons in 2023), respectively. For 9 months, cargo turnover amounted to 74.2 million tons compared to 41.1 million tons in the same period last year.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian ports increased cargo transshipment by 5% year-on-year – to 62 million tons, with iron ore transshipment accounting for 5.9% of the total cargo turnover, 1.9 million tons. This can be considered the beginning of the industry’s recovery after a difficult year in 2022, when port cargo turnover fell by 2.6 times compared to pre-war 2021.
