In January-August 2022, the Ukrainian coke plants reduced the production of gross coke of 6% moisture content by 55.2% compared to the same period in 2021 – to 2.94 million tons. Interfax-Ukraine agency reports about it with the reference to the CEO of the coke enterprise’s association Ukrkoks Anatoliy Starovoit’s data.
In 8 months of 2022, the production of metallurgical coke amounted to 2.52 million tons. In August 2022, 257.7 thousand tons of gross coke were produced, including 221 thousand tons of metallurgical coke.
At the same time, Yuzhkoks, Kametstal, Dnipro Metallurgical Plant, Zaporizhkoks and coke production at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih are currently operating. The largest coking plant – Avdiyivka Coke Plant – is idle.
In January-August 2022, 3.25 million tons of coal concentrate were delivered to domestic coke plants. 1.91 million tons of them were Ukrainian production, 622.9 thousand tons were imported from the Russian Federation (before the war), 65.4 thousand tons – from Kazakhstan (before the war), 29.1 thousand tons – from Poland, 447 thousand tons – from the USA.
As the president of Ukrmetalurgprom, Oleksandr Kalenkov, noted in interview for GMK Center, currently Ukrainian steelmakers do not experience a shortage of coking coal, but this is mainly because they work at minimum capacities.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2021, Ukrainian coke plants decreased coke production by 1.3% compared to 2020 – to 9.54 million tons. In December 2021, coke production decreased by 4% y/y – to 812 thousand tons.
