Ukraine increases imports of flat products by 16.8% y/y in 1H2025

In January-June 2025, 554.05 thousand tonnes of flat products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 16.8% year-on-year. This is based on GMK Centre’s calculations using data from the State Customs Service.

Coated flat products (HS 7210) accounted for about 50% of imports, up 17.2% y/y. The main suppliers of products during the period were Turkey – 139.42 thousand tonnes, Poland – 29.73 thousand tonnes, and Slovakia – 26.99 thousand tonnes.

Hot-rolled flat products (HS 7208) accounted for another 33% of supplies, or 182.93 thousand tonnes (+12.8% y/y). Turkey is the key source of supply of these products, accounting for 139.11 thousand tonnes. Another 26.23 thousand tonnes were imported from China and 4.78 thousand tonnes from Italy.

In January-June, Ukraine imported 52.82 thousand tonnes of flat cold-rolled products (HS 7209), up 36% y/y. Turkey imported 37.94 thousand tonnes of the product, China – 11.78 thousand tonnes, and Slovakia – 2.58 thousand tonnes.

During the second quarter, imports of the relevant products reached 285.8 thsd tonnes, up 7.4% compared to the same period in 2024, and 6.5% compared to the previous quarter.

In June, Ukrainian consumers imported 99.38 kt of flat products, up 15.3% y/y and 0.3% m/m. Shipments of coated flat products totalled 66.44 thousand tonnes (+44.3% y/y, +39.7% m/m), flat hot-rolled products – 17.07 thousand tonnes (-24.9% y/y, -46.3% m/m), and flat cold-rolled products – 5.53 thousand tonnes (-44.5% y/y, -42.8% m/m).

The cost of imports of flat products increased by 12.5% y/y – to $587.92 million in January-June, and by 14.1% y/y and 0.8% m/m in June – to $109.03 million.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, 983.49 thousand tonnes of flat products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 8.3% compared to 2023.

Coated flat products accounted for about half of the imports – 468.61 thousand tonnes (+7% y/y). Hot-rolled flat products accounted for another 34.7% of supplies, or 341.21 thousand tonnes (+8.7% y/y), and cold-rolled flat products for 79.31 thousand tonnes (-0.9% y/y).

In 2024, the cost of importing flat products increased by 5% y/y – to $1.08 billion.
