Ukraine increased its imports of flat rolled products by 10.2% y/y in January-August

In January-August 2025, 732.34 thousand tons of flat rolled steel were supplied to the Ukrainian market, which is 10.2% more than in the same period of 2024. This is evidenced by GMK Center calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

About 50% of imports are coated flat products (HS code 7210) – 361.95 thousand tons, which is 14.9% more than in the same period last year. The main suppliers of products during the period were Turkey – 192.08 thousand tons, Poland – 40.69 thousand tons, and Slovakia – 36.69 thousand tons.

Another 31% of supplies, or 227.78 thousand tons (-2.4% y-o-y), accounted for flat hot-rolled products (HS code 7208). The key source of supplies of these products is Turkey – 179.29 thousand tons. Another 27.05 thousand tons were imported from China, and 5.28 thousand tons from Italy.

In January-August, 71.04 thousand tons of flat cold-rolled products (HS code 7209) were imported, which is 36.1% more y/y. Turkey imported 51.7 thousand tons of the corresponding products, China – 15.26 thousand tons, and Slovakia – 3.31 thousand tons.

In August, Ukrainian consumers imported 87.36 thousand tons of flat rolled products, which is 12.1% less y-o-y and 3.9% m-o-m. Shipments of coated flat-rolled products amounted to 51.99 thousand tons (+20.9% y-o-y; +11.3% m-o-m), hot-rolled flat-rolled products – 16.66 thousand tons (-57.3% y/y; -40.9% m/m), and cold-rolled flat products – 11.21 thousand tons (+17% y/y; +60% m/m).

Imports of flat rolled products increased by 5.7% y-o-y – to $774.49 million in January-August, while in August they decreased by 19% y-o-y and 8.7% m-o-m – to $89.06 million.

It should be noted that in 2024, 983.49 thousand tons of flat rolled steel were supplied to the Ukrainian market, which is 8.3% more than in 2023.

About half of the imports were coated flat products – 468.61 thousand tons (+7% y/y). Another 34.7% of supplies, or 341.21 thousand tons (+8.7% y/y), accounted for hot-rolled flat products, and 79.31 thousand tons (-0.9% y/y) for cold-rolled flat products.

The cost of flat rolled steel imports in 2024 increased by 5% y-o-y – to $1.08 billion.
