Ukraine increased imports of long rolled products by 48% y/y in January-August

In January-August 2025, the long rolled steel market in Ukraine showed significant growth in imports – by 47.9% compared to the same period in 2024 – to 172.71 thousand tons. This is evidenced by GMK Center calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

The main volumes of supplies are accounted for by angles, shapes, and special profiles (HS code 7216) – 75.47 thousand tons, which is 45.2% more year-on-year. Turkey supplied 59.88 thousand tons of such products to the Ukrainian market, Poland – 7.26 thousand tons, and China – 4.33 thousand tons.

In addition, 48.43 thousand tons of other carbon steel bars and rods, not further processed, twisted (HS code 7214) were imported, which is 81.6% more than last year. Turkey imported 42.02 thousand tons of such products, Bulgaria – 2.92 thousand tons, and China – 1.92 thousand tons.

A small share of supplies is accounted for by hot-rolled bars and rods made of carbon steel, in coils (HS – 7213) – 17.78 thousand tons (+41.5% y/y). China sent 17.66 thousand tons to Ukraine.

Thus, Turkey and China are the main suppliers of long rolled metal products to the Ukrainian market. Turkish supplies of these products to the Ukrainian market in 2024 are estimated at 108.87 thousand tons, which is more than 63% of total imports, while Chinese supplies are estimated at 9.08 thousand tons (5.3%).

In August 2025, 29.64 thousand tons of long rolled metal products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, which is 60.4% more than in August 2024 and 93.5% more than in the previous month. Consumption of key import items during the month was as follows:

  • angles, shapes, and special profiles (HS code 7216) – 9.51 thousand tons (+1.1% y/y; +39.8% m/m);
  • other carbon steel bars and rods, unprocessed, twisted (HS code 7214) – 9.59 thousand tons (+262% y/y; +106.3% m/m);
  • hot-rolled bars and rods, made of carbon steel, in coils (HS code 7213) – 6.21 thousand tons (+138% y/y; no imports in the previous month).

Expenditures on imports of long products for 8 months increased by 62% y/y – to $185.02 million. In August, the indicator increased by 65.7% y/y and by 37.4% m/m – to $28.28 million.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ukraine increased its imports of long products by 12.1% year-on-year in 2024, to 171.9 thousand tons.

The main volumes of supplies were accounted for by angles, shapes, and special profiles (HS code 7216) – 76.69 thousand tons, which is 47.9% more y-o-y. Also, 43.84 thousand tons of other carbon steel bars and rods, without further processing, twisted (HS code 7214) were imported, which is 29.7% less than in 2023.
