Ukraine increased imports of Guatemalan nickel ore 2.1 times in 2020

In 2020, Ukraine increased imports of nickel ore originating in Guatemala 2.1 times to 1.1 million tons compared to 2019, according to the customs statistics.

Imports of Guatemalan nickel ore doubled in monetary terms to $53.1 million.

Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Plant (PFP) is the main consumer of nickel ore in Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukraine imported the bulk of nickel ore from Indonesia. But on 28 October 2019, and then, on 1 January 2020, the government banned exports of raw materials. In such a way, domestic processing in Indonesia is stimulated from time to time.

According to the data provided by Ukrzaliznytsia (the Ukrainian Railways) JSC’s Main Information and Computing Center, 1.6 million tons of nickel ore were shipped to the railway station Nikel Pobuzhsky in 2020. The raw materials came from railway stations Chornomorska and Beregova.

As GMK Centеr reported, Yuzhny Commercial Seaport earlier planned to increase transshipment of Guatemalan nickel ore. For that purpose, state stevedore conducted negotiations with a view to further conclusion of contracts.
