Ukraine imported 89 thousand tons of flat products in January

In January 2025, 89.05 thousand tons of flat steel products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 24.7% compared to January 2024 and 1.4% month-on-month. This is according to GMK Center’s calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

Hot-rolled flat products (HS 7208) accounted for the largest import volumes over the month, amounting to 36.58 thousand tons, up 27% y/y and 8.4% m/m. Turkey is the key supplier of products – 33.83 thousand tons. Another 0.8 thsd tonnes were imported from Italy.

In January of this year, 30.2 thousand tons (+1.9% y/y, -28.6% m/m) of coated flat products (HS 7210) were supplied to the Ukrainian market. Turkey shipped 13.88 kt of the product to Ukraine, Poland – 5.24 kt, and Slovakia – 4.76 kt.

Imports of cold-rolled flat products (HS 7209) increased by 342.2% y/y and 223.4% m/m to 14.77 thousand tons during the month. Turkey imported 10.69 thsd tonnes, and China – 3.8 thsd tonnes.

Ukrainian consumers’ spending on flat products imports in January increased by 6.1% y/y and decreased by 2.1% m/m – to $85.64 million.

As a reminder, in 2024, 983.49 thousand tons of flat products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 8.3% compared to 2023.

Coated flat products accounted for about half of the imports – 468.61 thousand tons (+7% y/y). Hot-rolled flat products accounted for another 34.7% of supplies, or 341.21 thousand tons (+8.7% y/y), and cold-rolled flat products for 79.31 thousand tons (-0.9% y/y).

In 2024, the cost of importing flat products increased by 5% y/y – to $1.08 billion.
