The main supplier of products is Turkey

In January-June 2024, Ukraine increased imports of long steel products by 5.1% year-on-year – to 78.58 thousand tons. This is evidenced by the data of the State Customs Service.

Most of all, angles, shaped and special profiles (HS 7216) were imported during the period – 34.85 thousand tons, which is 76.2% more than in January-June 2023. Turkey is the main supplier of these products – 25.87 thousand tons. Another 5.8 thsd tonnes were imported from Poland.

Also, Ukrainian consumers imported 17.5 thousand tons of rebar (HS 7214), down 48% y/y. Turkey shipped 15.09 thousand tons of rebar to the Ukrainian market, and China – 0.6 thousand tons.

Wire rod was among the top three imported long products, accounting for 8.92 thousand tons (+270% y/y). Almost the entire volume was supplied from Moldova – 8.72 thousand tons.

In June of this year, 22.1 thousand tons of long products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 26.9% month-on-month but down 11.3% y/y. Imports of rebar reached 5.92 thousand tons (+45.4% m/m; -45.5% y/y), wire rod – 5.67 thousand tons (+113.8% m/m; +246.1% y/y), angles – 7.38 thousand tons (-4.9% m/m; -12.8% y/y).

Import costs for 6 months decreased by 2.9% y/y – to $79.18 thsd tonnes, in June they amounted to $18.73 thsd tonnes, up 17.3% m/m and 23.8% y/y.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukraine increased imports of long products by 28% compared to 2022, to 167.13 thousand tons. Import costs increased by 17.4% y/y – to $174.61 million over the year. Most of all, the company imported angles, shapes and special profiles made of unalloyed steel (HS 7216) – 65.67 thousand tons for $56.84 million.
