In 2025, Ukrainian steel companies increased their exports of commercial pig iron by 53.5% compared to the same period in 2024, to 1.98 million tons. This is evidenced by GMK Center calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.
During the period, 1.33 million tons of pig iron were shipped to the US, up 41.6% y-o-y, 416,310 tons (+346.3% y-o-y) to Italy, 61,370 tons (-2.7% y-o-y) to Poland, and to the Netherlands – 52.03 thousand tons.
In December, shipments increased by 73.5% month-on-month and by 94.7% year-on-year, reaching 246.52 thousand tons. The US market received 47.95 thousand tons of pig iron (-15.8% m/m; -58.7% y/y), while Poland received 9.14 thousand tons (+51% m/m; +300.4% y/y). Italy imported 182.51 thousand tons of products (+290% month-on-month). The Netherlands did not import any pig iron from Ukraine.
In Q4, pig iron exports increased by 35.7% compared to the same period in 2024 and by 11.9% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 579.47 thousand tons, which is the highest quarterly figure since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Revenue from pig iron exports for the year amounted to $759.88 million, up 51.9% year-on-year. In December, the figure increased by 79.5% month-on-month and 81.9% year-on-year, to $90.76 million, and in the fourth quarter – by 25.4% year-on-year and 6.6% quarter-on-quarter, to $211.76 million.
It should be noted that in 2024, Ukraine increased its exports of commercial pig iron by 3.4% compared to 2023, from 1.25 million tons to 1.29 million tons. In 2022, exports amounted to 1.32 million tons, and in 2021 – 3.23 million tons. Ukrainian steelmakers’ export revenues for the year increased by 6.1% to $500.34 million.
During the year, export destinations diversified. The United States became the main consumer of Ukrainian pig iron, mainly due to the restoration of maritime logistics for Ukrainian iron and steel cargo. Exports to the EU declined due to market stagnation.
940,210 tons (+514% y/y) were shipped to the US, 102,490 tons (+617%) to Turkey, 93,280 tons (+61.9%) to Italy, and 63,050 tons (-90%) to Poland. In 2023, Poland consumed more than half of Ukraine’s pig iron exports (633.34 thousand tons), while in 2024, it consumed only 5%.
