Ukraine and the EU start modernizing the checkpoint on the border with Hungary

Ukraine and the EU are starting to modernize the Luzhanka-Beregsurany international automobile checkpoint on the border with Hungary. This is stated in the report of the State Agency for Infrastructure Recovery and Development.

The reconstruction was launched under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program. The project is funded by an EU grant and a loan from the European Investment Bank, with a total budget of €11.6 million (each party provides half the amount).

“The Luzhanka-Beregsurany checkpoint is of strategic importance for transport links between the two countries – it is located on the M-24 international highway, which is part of the TEN-T Mediterranean transport corridor,” the statement said.

The reconstruction of this checkpoint will contribute to the growth of trade, improve security, increase capacity and comfort at the border.

At the Luzhanka checkpoint in Zakarpattia region, the company plans to reconstruct the access road, arrange a pedestrian zone, additional inspection posts for different types of transport, and install two WIM weighing systems for trucks – at the entrance and exit.

By the end of November 2024, the Recovery Service in Zakarpattia region plans to start procurement procedures for the works and services necessary for the project implementation. The complex of works will last until the end of 2026.

The State Agency notes that together with its Hungarian colleagues, it plans to prepare a feasibility study for the overall development of automobile checkpoints on the border of Hungary and Ukraine.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in September, Ukraine and the EU moved forward with the conclusion of agreements on joint control at checkpoints with the EU, said Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine.
