Ukraine and Poland signed an agreement on the development of railway communication

Polish and Ukrainian railways have agreed to cooperate in the development of passenger and freight rail transport between the countries to increase the export-import potential. This is stated in press release JSC «Ukrzaliznytsia.

The corresponding document between the Polish operator Polskie Koleje Panstwowe Spółka Akcyjna (PKP S.A.) and Ukrzaliznytsia JSC was signed on August 28, 2023. It is noted that this is the first agreement of this level between the railways of the two countries since 1994.

“We are taking another important step towards strengthening partnership and developing rail transport between Ukraine and Poland. Together we will continue to develop border infrastructure and increase passenger and freight traffic between our countries, which will ultimately have a positive effect on our railways and the national economies of Ukraine and Poland,” said the Chairman of the Board of UZ Evgeny Lyashchenko.

In accordance with the terms of the PKP S.A. will work out measures to conclude separate agreements with UZ in the field of railway infrastructure management, freight and passenger rail transportation. Also, in order to develop drafts of individual agreements, the parties form joint working groups.

One of the principles of the agreement is to ensure safe and uninterrupted transportation of passengers and cargo by the parties.

The parties also agreed that the reloading of goods into wagons of a different gauge or the rearrangement of wagons to bogies of a different gauge is carried out not only by the receiving carrier at the border station located on the territory of his state, but, subject to agreement, such operations can be carried out by the carrier who delivers the goods to border station located on its territory.

Service of trains with locomotive traction between border stations for freight traffic in both directions will be carried out by locomotives and locomotive crews of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” and PKP S.A. with 50/50 parity.

Recall that earlier the Verkhovna Rada ratified amendments to the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and Moldova on the activities of railway transport, according to which simplifies the transfer of freight wagons between countries.

The adopted changes will allow to carry out transit traffic on the section Etuliya (Moldova) – Reni (Ukraine) – Giurgiulesti (Moldova), without a three-day stop in Rene.
