Ukrainian Railways shipped more than 850 thousand tons of iron ore to Slovakia in May

Ukrainian Railways (UZ) in May 2023 transferred to Slovakia more than 1 million tons of cargo, including more than 850 thousand tons of iron ore. This was discussed at a meeting of representatives of UZ and the Slovak railway carrier ZSSK Cargo, reports Rail.Insider.

In a month, 73 thousand tons of iron ore were transferred to the Czech steel plant Liberty Ostrava through the border crossing Chop – Cierna nad Tisou. 271 thousand tons of iron ore were shipped to Třinecké železárne, which is 51 thousand tons more than the planned volumes.

At the same time, through the transition Uzhgorod – Matevtsy to the address of the Slovak steel plant U.S. Steel Kosice 509 thousand tons of iron ore were transferred. This is almost 54 thousand tons higher than the plan.

In addition, iron ore was shipped to the port of Bratislava and the Austrian recipient Voestalpine.

“For the fourth month, the U.S. Steel is running at maximum power. Unfortunately, this crossing (Uzhgorod – Matevtsy) is followed by only one type of cargo. This is iron ore for this recipient,” said a ZSSK Cargo representative.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in March 2023, UZ passed through border crossings with Slovakia more than 1 million tons of iron ore. 570 thousand tons of iron ore were shipped to the address of the Slovak steel plant U.S. Steel Kosice, and more than 490 thousand tons – to Czech and Austrian recipients.

Also, in April 2023, Ukrainian Railways reduced export shipments of iron ore by 4% compared to the previous month – to 1.665 million tons. Transportation of ferrous metals abroad in April 2023 amounted to 414 thousand tons (+16% m/m).
